Representative government in practice

Connect With Congress

Know who represents you. Learn the role of Congress. Use official House and Senate resources to communicate respectfully and lawfully with the elected officials who serve your state and congressional district.

Why this belongs in the Supreme Citizens framework: Representative government depends on more than Election Day. Citizens may communicate with Members of Congress, petition government, follow legislation, attend public meetings, evaluate votes and public statements, and hold representatives accountable through lawful democratic processes. The Citizens Branch is an educational concept describing this continuing civic role; it is not a fourth branch of government and exercises no governmental authority.

Communicate effectively

A Simple Constituent Participation Process

Citizens do not need to agree on policy to use the same constitutional and civic standards for participation.

1. Identify

Confirm your Representative and Senators through official congressional directories.

2. Learn

Read the bill, issue, vote, committee activity, or policy information before contacting an office.

3. Communicate

State your position respectfully, identify yourself as a constituent when applicable, and make a clear request or ask a specific question.

4. Evaluate

Review the response and the official's subsequent actions using the same standards you would apply regardless of party.
